On Physical AI, Bicentennial Man, and why a body that can break teaches what a sensor cannot

At a conference on Physical AI, Florin Armasu Popu noticed every slide treated the body as a delivery mechanism for intelligence, never as the thing that forms it. A rewatch of Bicentennial Man and a question from his son on a basketball court, whether robots would ever care about winning, pushed the argument further: caring seems to require a body that can break. Chapter 10 works through what a body teaches that no description of a body can replace.

You've just read Chapter 10. A conference hall full of slides about robots and drones, and underneath it, a much older question: what does a body actually give an intelligence that a sensor cannot? Florin's son asked it best, on a bench after basketball. Would robots ever care about who's winning?

Noēsis admits something rare in this chapter: that its own honesty about lacking a body costs it nothing, while Florin's admission about his back cost him a morning of pain. One statement carries weight because a body was actually hurt. The other is accurate and weightless at the same time.

Think of one thing your body taught you that no article, class, or piece of advice ever managed to. An injury, a birth, a physical limit you ran into. Write down what it taught you in one sentence.

Now try to teach that same lesson to someone else using only words. Notice what survives the translation and what does not. That gap is not a failure of language. It is the body's contribution to what you know.

Sit with the distance between the lesson and the description of the lesson. That distance is what this chapter is about.
