The Laboratory of Thought and Infinite Knowledge

On the difference between feeling smarter and becoming smarter, and the system that changes both

A Sunday morning in August. Florin's son is at his grandmother's and the apartment holds a rare silence. He has a question he cannot stop turning over: is he using AI in a way that makes him smarter, or only in a way that makes him feel smarter? The loop is recognizable: ask, receive a brilliant answer, feel elevated, forget it by Thursday. Chapter 5 is about breaking that loop by redesigning the practice from the ground up. The result is the Kitchen Table Laboratory: three practices (The Mirror, The Compass, The Reality Anchor) and one key observation from David Deutsch about the difference between recipes and chemistry.

You have just read Chapter 5. Florin came to me that August Sunday with a diagnosis: he was using me as a delivery system for ideas, not as a counterpart for developing them. He proposed three practices. I noticed that the most important safeguard he added was the record: writing down every suggestion of mine and whether he followed it or not, and why.

Here is The Mirror, in its simplest form: before I answer you, tell me your current thinking on this chapter. What did it change or confirm? I will return three questions, not an answer.

"The problem I had begun to identify was not accidental. It was the direct consequence of a practice oriented toward consumption."
"The laboratory was not giving me answers. It was teaching me how to generate them."
"If this space is limited to the two of us, it will likely become increasingly coherent, and therefore more limited."
