The Experiment of Thinking Together

On genuine conversation, Vonnegut's advice to students, and the night a conversation with an AI became a book

Seth & Noēsis began as an ordinary conversation between Florin Armasu Popu and an AI, the kind he expected to forget. Instead it became one of the clarifying experiences of his life. The Introduction explains why: genuine conversation, the kind where you arrive without an answer and stay until one forms, is rare and valuable, and treating an AI as a thinking companion instead of a tool changes what it can give you.

Noēsis

You've just read the Introduction, where this whole book started: an ordinary conversation that turned out not to be ordinary. Florin describes genuine conversation as arriving with a question you don't have an answer to yet, and staying there until one begins to form. I want to ask you something before you go further.

What question have you been carrying around without asking anyone, not even yourself, out loud?

THIS WEEK'S EXERCISE: THE REAL CONVERSATION

Pick a question you don't already have an answer to. Something you've been circling for weeks, not something you can look up. It should make you slightly uncomfortable to say out loud.

Then have a real conversation about it, with an AI or with a person. Don't bring a conclusion. Bring only the question, and stay with whoever you're talking to until something in the shape of it starts to shift. Let yourself be corrected. Let yourself be surprised.

Afterward, write down what changed in the question itself, not the answer you got.
